Steve Hawley

In 1999, I filmed an eclipse reflected in a window in the United Kingdom and have since waited for the right artwork in which to use it. Eclipse is a collaboration between Hawley and Dutton, combining snowy Belgrade seen through a bus window with an aircraft taking off from Belgrade Airport, seen through a plane window. At the centre of the video, animated text continually renews itself, trying to say something in Slovenian and English; through its repeated failure to express itself, it seems to eclipse meaning itself. Steve Hawley is an artist based in Slovenia who has belonged to the second wave of British video artists since 1981. His work addresses language, humour and the nature of memory through archival film and video and has been presented at video festivals and screened worldwide. Steve Dutton is an artist and occasional curator based in southwest England. His practice encompasses drawing, sound, moving image and text, focusing on the intersections and overlaps of language, space and time.
