Biography
Vouvoula Skoura was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. She studied graphic arts at the Athens Technological Institute (A.T.I.). During the Greek dictatorship, she lived in London, where she attended art history lectures (1970) and obtained a qualification in computer graphics for video at Middlesex Polytechnic (1988). For many years, she has explored experimental multimedia photographic techniques. Her film and video works have been presented at international festivals and universities in more than fifty cities worldwide. She has collaborated with the Greek Ministry of Culture, MEGARON – the Athens Concert Hall, the municipal regional theatres of Thessaly and Patras, and cultural organisations including AploTheatre, Attis Theatre, Fournos – Centre for Digital Culture, Patras European Capital of Culture, and KAM – Centre for Mediterranean Architecture. Her collaboration with theatre critic Eleni Varopoulou has been presented at the Argos Festival and the National Theatre Summer Academy. It includes the video Philoctetes: The Wound, the multimedia play Tyfo, staged at Aplo Theatre, and Mothers: A Tribute to Brecht, among other works. Her films Internal Migration (1984) and Skoria Fotos (1989) received commendations at Greece's Drama Short Film Festival. Her video Black Moon won first prize in the Athens video art competition in 1998. ETEL ADNAN: Words in Exile (2008) received the Greek Film Centre Award at the 10th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. In 2009, she received the Greek Graphic Designers Association's lifetime achievement award.
